What you have done is considered a “standard practice” by many websites, especially banks. Some sites go so far as to disable the browser back button; but this is considered intrusive, because it makes the user think you are “doing something” to their computer.

Possible Workaround
Use the following option of eStore as an workaround if you think this will be an issue for you:
1) Create a “Checkout” page and place the shopping cart shortcode in this page.
2) Go to eStore settings and specify the URL of the page created in step 1 in the “Checkout Page” field.
3) Then tick the “Automatic redirection to checkout page” checkbox and save the settings.
Now after someone adds an item to the cart they will get redirected to the checkout page automatically and if they hit the “browser refresh” button it won’t add the item again.
No issues with upgrading have been reported. As always, it is your responsibility, as a business owner, to ensure that proper backup precautions have been taken; in the unlikely event that a system rollback is required.
Outbound e-mail, from the plugin’s point of view, is sent regardless of the kind of product (physical or digital) purchased (same code used).
I suspect the problem is being caused by a combination of the following…
1. Sometimes, a provider will limit the number of outgoing messages per day or month. Go Daddy is famous for this; they charge you for sending more than X number of messages per month.
2. The messages containing links get caught up in the recipient’s spam filter.
3. You could also try this…

Check or uncheck the box (opposite of current setting) and see if that makes a difference.
WP eStore -> Manage Products -> “Your Product” -> Edit -> AddOn Settings -> Stamp the PDF File

You are correct, the “1” is the product ID number. If you are writing a PHP script, and you have a variable (returned from a form POST)called $pro_id then you would substitute the “1” with the $pro_id variable name.
Try creating a private “test page” to try your script out. On my site, I have one that contains one of every button.
