ModeratorQuestion… are they the only one having issues? And is BT the common ISP?
wzp
ModeratorThe great thing about computers, compared to humans, is that they do EXACTLY what you tell them… not what you’d like them to do, LOL. You could also partial protection shortcodes on the renewal page, so that logged in members see the renewal form, and non=logged in members see a warning message & login form.

ModeratorThe issue MIGHT be the ISP caching, of which you have no control over. Also, what browser(s) are the affected members using, and are they accepting your eMember login cookies? Usually, we also see this happen, when the members are behind a very tightly controlled firewall; such as a school district, or certain nation states.

ModeratorPlease ensure that your PayPal profile is correctly setup, to ensure that IPN are sent back to your site. Also, you might want to perform some kind of hands on testing, with a $1 button, to make sure the user experience is working the way it should.

ModeratorAre you using PayPal Buy Now & Subscription buttons in eMember, or are you going through eStore?

ModeratorWhen a member’s account expires, it is possible to auto-downgrade the member to a restricted level; which only allows them to renew their membership; or not… this would allow expired members to still login and renew (or not) their memberships.

ModeratorThe question I have, is what rule does the software use to trigger such emails?
Please look at the second screenshot in the referenced documentation. Also, when the email jobs kick off, there should be corresponding enties in the debug logs.

ModeratorOne of the members is using a different email address for their PayPal account than their membership, so eMember assumed he was a new member (Iām aware of this limitation and just correct things manually when it happens).
Are you requiring members to be logged in, before they are allowed to renew?
When I went to look at the log files, the files eMember_debug.txt and jpn_handle_debug_eMember.txt files did NOT contain any information other than the date & timestamp of my reset.
Did you receive any log entries for the first member? If you have IPN log entries for the first member, but not the second, it means PayPal had trouble processing that member’s payment method.
I received email notices from PayPal,
Log into your PayPal account and make sure you were properly credited for each renewal.

ModeratorMy assumption was that a reminder email
Email reminder notices behave according to this configuration:
Setting Up “Before” and “After” Member Account Expiry Notification Email

ModeratorIt appears that several payments are not being reported back to eMember, or if they are, eMember is dropping the record.
Unless you have the debug logs turned on; there is no certain way for sure, to know if eMember is receiving the IPN from PayPal. There are a number of reasons, but without the debug log information, we would only be guessing. But because of the ratio of payments, it might be due to payment method failure; in which the member used a payment method that either failed, was rejected, or delayed.
Please turn on debug logs and periodically check for errors.

Moderator…and press the button to go back in my browser…
THAT is a “no-no.” You should never just “push the back button” and expect nothing bad to happen. The reasons are myriad, and mostly technical.
In the case of eStore, using the back button at an inopportune time, such as what you described; can cause a duplicate “add to cart” to occur. This situation is not just limited to eStore; banking & credit card websites, specifically warn you not to use your browser’s back button; or duplicate payments or withdrawals will occur. And if you try using the back button, during the checkout process on Amazon; you get a redirection popup (they thought of this, LOL).
P.S. I noticed you have been using eStore for a long time; please ensure you are using the latest version of WordPress and our plugins.

ModeratorPlease enable ALL debug logs. Then try again, and then check the logs.
Also, you really should download and install a more recent version of the plugin(s); but ONLY AFTER UPGRADING TO WordPress 5.x or higher.

ModeratorYou are asking if the [wp_eMember_user_bookmarks] shortcode could also sort/list the bookmarks by page/post category? The current shortcode does not support that; it would have to be a custom work order request.

ModeratorAlso, the template file itself reverted to the original default text.
Have you examined the modification dates & times of that particular file, to see if it is really taking your modifications & then “reverting” back to the original?
