As a follow up to this, every registration since this upgrade has failed to add the user to the appropriate membership level and WLM no longer adds them to a level and gives them a registration date of 1969.
I’m going to delete the plugin – using method 2 and try again.
April 16, 2012 at 12:59 pm in reply to: Registration emails not being sent for Wishlist Member #44027rickandersonaiaMemberSomething is wrong because neither of your suggestions are accurate. I’ve been using and upgrading WP eStore for 2 years. And I make my living – in part – teaching other folks how to use it.
There is no check in the box beside “Use WordPress Mailing System”. Having said that, I am receiving an additional email that I only started getting when I had checked that box. However, for the results above the box was not checked.
I followed method 1 for upgrading. That is, I uninstalled the plugin and uploaded new files via FTP. It did give me the message that I hadn’t followed the directions, but I deactivated it and reactivated it again and it appears to be working exactly the same as before.

November 1, 2011 at 11:30 pm in reply to: Customer sale not registering and emails not sending #38053rickandersonaiaMemberHaving said that – it didn’t used to be the case that post payment processing was necessary for WP eStore to record the transaction. Is this a new feature of version 6?
November 1, 2011 at 11:23 pm in reply to: Customer sale not registering and emails not sending #38052rickandersonaiaMemberYep – ok, that was it. We did follow the checklist and we installed the PDT which I mistakenly assumed meant that the client had his IPN properly set up.

November 1, 2011 at 2:43 pm in reply to: Customer sale not registering and emails not sending #38048rickandersonaiaMemberI’m helping bigcabguy on this issue as well.
I’ve set up WP eStore many, many times – so I’m confident that we’ve handled the easy stuff.
He is currently using v6.0.9, the site is hosted at HostGator
The mailchimp reference in the debug file actually came with the plugin download. That is, that version of the plugin comes with that 10/29/2011 mailchimp success reference in it.
Debug File Empty Troubleshooting Checklist
1. it is checked
2. it is also checked
3. we get the appropriate message when calling the paypal.php file and it is recorded properly in the debug file.
4. we get the appropriate message when we use a sandbox account to text the IPN. We also get the appropriate entry in the debug file.
Having said all of that,
1. When a purchaser selects the add to cart button, the product is added to the cart.
2. When selecting pay now the purchaser is taken to PayPal.
3. Upon payment at paypal the purchaser is redirected to the thankyou page.
4. The thankyou page has the transaction result shortcode and provides both the actual result of the transaction AND the appropriate download link for the product.
5. The customer data IS NOT updated. No customer is added to the customer table.
6. The sale is not recorded in stats.
7. A receipt email is not sent to the purchaser.
8. The blessed notification of product sale email is not sent to the owner
9. PayPal notifies the owner that a payment has been made
10 PayPal sends a receipt to the purchaser for the transaction
I personally have not tested this version of the plugin on a blank site. However, I do work exclusively in Thesis and have never seen this type of issue. I generally feel comfortable saying that WP eStore works flawlessly with Thesis right out of the box.
rickandersonaiaMemberThanks – that does answer my question and its not the worst “feature” in the world. In a site that sells access to courses with each course being a membership level, the purchase of an additional membership level extends the period of time that the member has access to the earlier levels.
This could actually be a selling point. “Purchase a new course and extend your membership on previous courses!”
The only reason I experienced the condition I described in the initial post is that the additional membership levels were added manually for testing and thus didn’t get the automatic upgrading of primary member level. The only time this becomes an issue then is when the admin manually adds a member level to a user.
rickandersonaiaMemberOne more follow up – perhaps what happens is that when she purchases level 2 her level 1 membership is “upgraded” to level 2 – making level 2 her primary level and resetting the start date to the day she purchased level 2. Now level 1 is a secondary level and its start date is no longer relevant. The level 1 start date will no longer be considered in the “expired” calculation.
Is this how it works?
rickandersonaiaMemberTo follow up – I looked at the member table in the database. It doesn’t appear to track when subsequent membership levels are started and thus doesn’t show them as active. Am I mistaken about this? Is the expired value only applicable to the primary member level? Does the plugin only track the start date and calculate the expiration date for the primary membership level?
rickandersonaiaMemberwhoops
rickandersonaiaMemberI understand your position. The real value of WP eMember isn’t that it’s cheaper than the competition (which it is). The real value is that it is stable and well integrated with the other tipsandtricks-hq plugins.
For a new person setting up a membership site there is no substitute to having shopping cart, membership and affiliate all integrated so that setup and configuration is simple and you can expect it all to work together.
I am looking forward to testing your new Lightbox Plugin. Secure access to Amazon S3 for both flash and html 5 video is a unique product offering. I currently have to rely on multiple products to accomplish the same task.
rickandersonaiaMemberNiall – I use Simple:Press Forum with WP eMember. I integrate the WordPress User database with WP eMember user data at which point it becomes a single sign on system where a member can login once and have access to membership content and the forum.
I’ve created some instructional videos for this that you can watch for free till
September 15 (at which point they go to the paid part of the membership site). http://www.byobwebsite.com/video-tutorials/create-a-membership-site/
It’s a good combination
January 10, 2011 at 11:53 am in reply to: Wishlist Member and recurring billing/monthly subscription error #27863rickandersonaiaMemberYes, that does make sense. Thanks for the response.
rickandersonaiaMemberI’m a big fan of telling folks how good Tips and Tricks HQ products are. I originally started my membership site (byobwebsite.com) with WP eStore and WP eMember. For a variety of nonsensical reasons I switched to WLM in May of last year (It seemed a bit more feature rich and I wanted an API so that I could customize my site without concern that changes in the plugin would require me to fix my customization).
It turns out to have been one of the top two worst decisions I’ve made in the development of my site. In my experience WLM NEVER works as advertised. You don’t have to believe me either. Just take a look at the support forums and you will find hundreds of examples of this.
While they advertise it as being feature rich, many people find that those features simply don’t work. The drip content feature? Doesn’t work. A couple months ago on the paid Wishlist Insider membership arm of WLM their own authorized developers were warning people not to upgrade to the latest release because it was breaking their sites.
They also advertise their API. Except that they regularly change that API and anything you’ve done in the old one FAILS in the new one. What’s worse, they don’t tell you that they’ve changed it in the release notes so you upgrade to the latest version and BAM your site no longer works.
Not a single upgrade has worked for me as promised, and EVERY upgrade has introduced a new set of bugs that you have to trouble shoot. Seriously, upgrading that plugin feels like the most dangerous thing I do on my website.
Those guys spend way too much time and resources on marketing and far too little time and resources on testing and debugging their software and on customer support. They recently published an article on their “Insider” site on how to run a successful membership site. It perfectly articulates their model of spending 80% of their effort on marketing and sales and 20% of their effort on meeting their customers needs.
Run, don’t walk, away from that plugin. If you value your membership base you won’t use that software.
If I could find a smooth upgrade path from WLM to WP eMember I’d do it in a heartbeat.
