The author says, “But if you aren’t registered, there’s very little enforcement.

To really enforce the law in the US, EU would need help from the US tax authorities. At the moment US tax authorities show little interest in enforcing this – moving wealth from US to EU isn’t in their best interest.

However, there have been some rumors on EU tax authorities starting to use spiders and web bots to find law-breakers, but whether these exist is unclear. There’s some information about this in Taxamo blog, but their material seems to be a bit biased to increase sales.”

Still, I think integration with Taxamo would be useful. It would be especially important to comply should a business have aspirations to create an office in the EU. At that point, I believe, it would be subject to a VAT audit.

It looks like the new addon goes some way to satisfy the new, asinine EU requirements, however it doesn’t look like it:

– Collects two non-conflicting pieces of evidence verifying the location of EU customers. I’m not sure that asking customers to self identify their country is acceptable.

– Identifies customers who have a valid VAT number.

It also has the disadvantage that it requires us to keep up with the rates in many different VAT jurisdictions, to say nothing of generating all the necessary paperwork.

In the short term your up-coming option to exclude EU customers looks like the most useful.

It seems like a number of shopping carts are providing an integration with a service like Taxamo (taxamo.com). Any chance you might consider this?

I had exactly the same problem (i.e. members did not have access to protected content) when I updated from eMember 8.4.3 to 8.6.8. I went back to 8.4.3 – same problem. It seems that 8.6.8 unchecked all the “Global Access To” boxes, if that’s possible. I don’t think I did it?

Thanks for your reply. They had purchased a membership of a special area of my site called Gold Pass by subscription and they had actually successfully paid an installment in the past. Is the product ID stored in Paypal?

I installed the new version, but the names are still not being transferred into MailChimp (they are stored in eMember).
