Hello, I don’t want to try to invent what is invented already. So the problem is: I’m going to sell a program. Minor upgrades and some add-ons will be free and I will charge a fee for major upgrades. Additionally, I don’t want to use license keys.
My idea is to sell the downloadable file with no cart, just “buy now” button and after the payment is collected, set up a membership for future upgrades – there will be page with free upgrades or add-ons downloads accessible for customers (members) only. Next main version will have different page accessible to higher membership.
What is the best way how to do it, please? I have read
and
which seems to be very simple. It is not clear how the customers may request for the link without membership, though. And it seems that method doesn’t support paid upgrades (with discounts) for current customers.
Thank you very much.

As for “paid upgrades with discounts” for current customers, there a number of ways to accomplish this. Here is one rather “creative way” of doing it…
Because you are not using license keys, the bar for verifying prior ownership will be relatively low; you only want to prove they have access to an existing copy.
Create a discount coupon, based on some unique text or “Easter Egg” that users can easily find; if they are told where to look for it.
When the upgrade is released, post an announcement someplace, telling where to look for the discount coupon code!
January 24, 2014 at 11:27 pm #60485adminKeymasterYou are using eMember with eStore so I think the following structure should do the job:
Lets say the customers who buy software X will be in Membership level X.
1) Create a WordPress page
2) Add download buttons on this page for the free addons that is offered with sofware X.
3) Protect this page so only membership level X has access to it.
When you sell software Y, do the same thing for it.
January 25, 2014 at 2:26 pm #60486nebeskyMemberadmin: Thank you, that’s what I am thinking about. The question is how does the customer login to that page?
I made product X and membership X and it is connected through Reference Text in Product setup. When I bought the product X, I became a member of X. Fine. However, because I was not asked for my username and password, my membership hasn’t any so I cannot login.
I (as the customer) should be forced to fill in a username and password before downloading the product. Is it possible? Or is there an another way how to do it?
Thank you very much.
January 25, 2014 at 4:54 pm #60487nebeskyMemberI have found the link to register form was in the email (and email was marked as spam). Is it possible to force registration form to “thank you” page after purchase is made (for members without username and password)? Many thanks.
January 25, 2014 at 10:56 pm #60488adminKeymasterChange your registration scenario to the 2nd or the 3rd one. Fully read the following documentation which will help you:
