HOLD THE PHONE!
I have done every step exactly to the book and it all came down to the way I was writing the Level ID. It needed to be (02) NOT (2). Thanks for the help, sorry for the trouble. I hope this helps someone else who may run into this problem.
Everything is working fine now.
Thank you!
wisteriaproMemberI have read the documentation on creating the pages with the proper codes, managing the flow. When I send visitors from the Join Us page to the Registration page, all they see is “Free membership is disabled on this site!”. It seems I am unable to change the settings to allow free member registration because a “free” user level doesn’t exist. That is not very easy to figure out since I cannot find a way to actually create a “free” membership level.
This is what my Add Membership Level screen looks like:

I do not see a way to create one even though I must do that first before applying the settings for Allow Free Membership (Settings). I did just notice when trying to apply that feature in settings, it displays “Membership level with the given ID is reserved! Please use different one.”
Now, when I added “[wp_eMember_registration_form_for level=1]” to the registration page it shows a form. My frustration is that “Free Members Must Confirm Email Address:” does not work through this channel because the system doesn’t see it as “free”. I would like to find a way to correct the problem of why the free membership level is not being recognized instead of only using “[wp_eMember_registration_form_for level=1]”.
wisteriaproMemberPeter, I am not using a caching program.

There are no options to actually make the user level “free” as described in the setup directions.
wisteriaproMemberI had to remove the shortcode for free registration because I don’t want my viewers seeing it. For now I’m doing it all manually so that I can get them the confirmation email then have them reset their password. That’s the only way I can get the system to accept them and send them their login info at this point until the problem is fixed.
wisteriaproMemberI will add that I’m unsure if it is actually creating a “free” membership level. There seems no way for me to distinguish that level in the setup for some reason. It’s like there is no option to make it a free level at all.
