I have followed the instructions on creating a Free Membership site but the settings will not hold.
Steps I went through:
1 – Create a free membership level from the Manage Levels menu
2 – Allow Free Membership (Settings)
3 – Add free Membership Level ID: (Settings)
4 – Apply “Free Members Must Confirm Email Address” (Settings)
When I “Update Options” the free membership settings go back to blank. This obviously causes the registration page to show content my visitors should not see.

WP Version: WordPress 3.4.1
WP eMember: v8.1.5
Thank you!
August 19, 2012 at 10:05 pm #48506wisteriaproMemberI will add that I’m unsure if it is actually creating a “free” membership level. There seems no way for me to distinguish that level in the setup for some reason. It’s like there is no option to make it a free level at all.
August 19, 2012 at 10:41 pm #48507PeterMemberHi, The settings shouldn’t reset. Are you using a caching plugin?
If so you may need to follow these tips regarding the caching settings:
https://support.tipsandtricks-hq.com/forums/topic/using-the-plugins-with-w3-total-cache-plugin
Also check that you are not keeping old copies of the plugin in the “plugins” directory – ie, when loading a new version of the plugin you must deactivate/delete the old one before installing the new.
August 19, 2012 at 11:56 pm #48508wisteriaproMemberI had to remove the shortcode for free registration because I don’t want my viewers seeing it. For now I’m doing it all manually so that I can get them the confirmation email then have them reset their password. That’s the only way I can get the system to accept them and send them their login info at this point until the problem is fixed.
August 20, 2012 at 2:20 pm #48509wisteriaproMemberPeter, I am not using a caching program.
This is what my Add Membership Level screen looks like:

There are no options to actually make the user level “free” as described in the setup directions.
August 21, 2012 at 12:13 am #48510adminKeymasterYou can make any membership level free if you want to. This post will help you understand how eMember does it:
Let me know if that helps.
August 21, 2012 at 2:20 am #48511wisteriaproMemberI have read the documentation on creating the pages with the proper codes, managing the flow. When I send visitors from the Join Us page to the Registration page, all they see is “Free membership is disabled on this site!”. It seems I am unable to change the settings to allow free member registration because a “free” user level doesn’t exist. That is not very easy to figure out since I cannot find a way to actually create a “free” membership level.
This is what my Add Membership Level screen looks like:

I do not see a way to create one even though I must do that first before applying the settings for Allow Free Membership (Settings). I did just notice when trying to apply that feature in settings, it displays “Membership level with the given ID is reserved! Please use different one.”
Now, when I added “[wp_eMember_registration_form_for level=1]” to the registration page it shows a form. My frustration is that “Free Members Must Confirm Email Address:” does not work through this channel because the system doesn’t see it as “free”. I would like to find a way to correct the problem of why the free membership level is not being recognized instead of only using “[wp_eMember_registration_form_for level=1]”.
August 21, 2012 at 2:40 am #48512wisteriaproMemberHOLD THE PHONE!
I have done every step exactly to the book and it all came down to the way I was writing the Level ID. It needed to be (02) NOT (2). Thanks for the help, sorry for the trouble. I hope this helps someone else who may run into this problem.
Everything is working fine now.
Thank you!
