I uploaded a vertically oriented image of my book cover in the Add/Edit products page. When I put that product in a display shortcode the image came out squashed. Other than recreating the graphic as a square, how can I make the book cover come out with the dimensions ratios in tact?
The image is 1564 by 2000 (if memory serves me correctly.)

Okay, so I tried the enable smart image options in general settings and I guess it looks better. But it truncates one of the images in a bad way. Is there a way I can determine which area of the image will show up in the square?
Smart thumbnail creator will generally take a section from the middle (it will try to find the best bit basically). If you want your thumbnail to look exactly how you have it visualized in your mind then the best option is to resize them before you upload them.
