I have implemented the site-wide search function by setting up a separate search page, just tested it and it works beautifully, it is obviously searching using keywords in the image titles. I have a few questions to understand the search in more detail…
1. Does it search just the image title or does it also search the image description?
2. Does it have to be on a separate page or can the shortcode be used on the site’s home page/search box on main page?
3. With the ‘Search option inside a gallery’ does this just search the images in that gallery or does it search sitewide?
4. If the answer to 3. is that it just searches that particular gallery, then is it possible to have a gallery search option in each gallery as well as the separate page search option for a sitewide search, or will adding both shortcodes to my site cause a tech conflict?
Many thanks
David
August 13, 2014 at 2:19 am #64866PeterMemberHi David,
1. Does it search just the image title or does it also search the image description?
The search function will search the following properties:
– photo description and alt text
– photo caption/excerpt
– photo title
– photo name
2. Does it have to be on a separate page or can the shortcode be used on the site’s home page/search box on main page?
Due to the way it is currently designed this feature works best when the search shortcode is on a separate page – because the results are returned underneath the search box form.
If you put the shortcode in a widget, it will still work but the results will be displayed in the widget area and hence they will look a bit cramped.
(We will improve this feature in a future update so that the results are shown on a page no matter where the search widget is placed)
So for now, if you wanted to put a search box on main page, maybe you can insert a link called “Search Photos” on the front page which will lead your customers to the photo search page.
3. With the ‘Search option inside a gallery’ does this just search the images in that gallery or does it search sitewide?
The search is performed across all galleries. But since you brought up the point, we will also look at making the search smart enough in a future update to only search within a gallery if someone is doing the query from a certain gallery.

August 20, 2014 at 2:48 am #64868PeterMemberHi soundman,
We have greatly improved the search functionality over the past few days.
We have now addressed point 2 from our discussion above.
If you grab the latest version of the plugin you should see that with the new version you can place the search shortcode anywhere on your site and the results will be displayed nicely on a separate page.

The behaviour discussed in point 3 is something we will add in a future update soon.

August 20, 2014 at 5:11 pm #64870soundmanMember… a quick question Peter. I’ve put the search box in a widjet in the right side bar so that it sits nice and uniform throught all the pages of the site. If you go to my test gallery page and run a search for ‘castle’, you can see it brings up a nice blank page with the search result… [http://photospastandpresent.co.uk/photos/?page_id=187]
…alternatively, if you go to my home page and run a search for ‘castle’, you can see that it brings up the search result ok, but that it also displays ‘Meta Slider’ which is located on my home page only… [http://photospastandpresent.co.uk/photos/]
Is the reason for this (displaying Meta Slider in the search results) due to my theme and the way in which I have implemented meta slider on my home page rather than anything at your end?
Many thanks
David

If you look at the WordPress Template Hierarchy, you’ll see the “Front Page” uses a different template than the “Post Page.”
http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Hierarchy
What you need to do is create a “Search Result Page” template for your theme.

March 4, 2015 at 7:23 pm #64873daveiomMemberHi,
Just a couple of questions:
Did an update ever occur that allowed the image search to only search in a particular gallery rather than a site-wide search?
I don’t want to change the image file names to keywords that will show in any searches, what other field do I add the keywords?
Thanks
March 4, 2015 at 10:29 pm #64874PeterMemberHi Dave,
The photo seller search functionality will search ALL galleries/photos which are part of the photo seller system.
You can add keywords to any of the following fields of a photo:
– photo description and alt text
– photo caption/excerpt
– photo title
– photo name
The photo seller plugin initially reads any EXIF data from the photo file during upload time and it will use that (if available) as part of its search too.
If you want to manually add more keywords to a photo, simply go to the gallery settings for a particular gallery and scroll down to the photo list and click the edit link for a photo. That will take you to the photo edit window and you can add captions, descriptions etc.
We’ve even recently added the extra capability of being able to read the IPTC keyword data from an image file. (This will only apply to newly uploaded photos and not photos which were uploaded before the new feature was added because the IPTC keyword data is read during the upload process)

Are there any plans to make the search facility only search a particular gallery rather than site-wide?
March 6, 2015 at 1:45 am #64876PeterMemberThanks for the suggestion Dave we’ll give it some serious consideration. Just keep in mind that we already have quite a large “TODO” list so if we were to decide put such a feature in it might not be as urgent as the other items.
August 25, 2015 at 11:48 am #64877asrMemberHow is going with make searching in particular gallery only? It’s gonna be done soon?
November 5, 2015 at 3:48 am #64878alexkirMemberHi,
Search engine does not pick up images with keywords which are not in order or partial query (two keywords out of three).
1. Can you please explain your search algorithm? I need it for help page using search.
This is what I found so far:
For example:
image has in “tree white yellow” added to Alternative Text.
Search using “tree white yellow” in this particular order finds image(s).
Search using “yellow” in this particular order finds image(s).
Search using “white tree yellow” in this particular order DOES NOT find image(s).
Search using “tree yellow” in this particular order DOES NOT find image(s).
Search using “yellow tree” in this particular order DOES NOT find image(s).
2. What kind of ATIF info search can find?
I have extracted ETIF info from the image:
Exif Image Size 3,872 × 2,592
Make NIKON CORPORATION
Camera Model Name NIKON 1 J1
Orientation Rotate 270 CW
Software Ver.1.40
….
Search does not return anything for : “NIKON”, “3,872”, “J1”.
Thank you,
Alex

There is a suggestion about your TODO list, which I believe will benefit everybody, you as a business and all of your customers. This is what needs to be done:
1. Create feature WISH-LIST
2. Create a page for your WISH-LIST TODO features list with an exact $value required to complete each feature.
3. Create a visual donations meter with a payment option for each feature.
Once the required amount is reached, you will code and deliver a free feature to everybody.
This way your product will become more robust and popular.
I am sure there are many people who would not mind to chip-in to get certain features implemented by you or your subcontractors. What do you think?
