Any ecommerce plugin that uses PayPal’s IPN feature can only work if PayPal can send IPN to your server. Only your hosting provider can tell you why PayPal is failing to send the IPN to this server (it doesn’t have this problem sending to other servers).
You can completely deactivate eStore while you try to figure out why PayPal can’t communicate with your server. Try sending a fake IPN message from PayPal’s server to your home page using the PayPal’s sandbox tools and you will see the same error.
This article will help if you are not familiar with PayPal sandbox:

February 22, 2011 at 11:10 am #18214Chris YCFMemberOk, will check it out.
But again: Do I have to insert any IPN URL in Paypal settings in addition to my Paypal Email adress, which I stored in WP eStore settings?
February 22, 2011 at 11:50 pm #18215wpCommerceModeratorIt really doesn’t matter. When eStore submits all the product information to PayPal, It will tell PayPal where to send the IPN.
March 25, 2011 at 4:26 pm #18216Chris YCFMemberHi there,
it’s me again and I’m getting mad: After reinstalling WPeStore in another directory it isn’t working again. For several days I’m now oscillate between Paypal and GoDaddy and business stalls!
Obviously Paypal is blocked from sending it’s IPN to my system, located
right there:
http://www.you-can-fight.com/service/wp-content/plugins/wp-cart-for-digital-products/paypal.php
I’ve just checked it out using Paypal’s sandbox tool an got the message:
IPN delivery failed. Unable to connect to the specified URL. Please verify
the URL and try again.
No doubt thtat the URL is totally right. All other sources of error have
been checked.
Same problem while testing this URL:
http://www.you-can-fight.com/wp-content/plugins/wp-cart-for-digital-products/paypal.php
This is what Paypal says:
We got a HTTP Response 408. That means, they we not get a HTTP Response Code from the server within the given time frame.
This is what GoDaddy says:
When I go to the provided URL, I am getting the error message “Debug is enabled. Check the ipn_handle_debug.log file for debug output.” This is not indication that the server is timing out. In order to further troubleshoot this issue, we would need the specific URL where this issue is occurring and the steps that we can take to duplicate the issue.
This is what my ipn_handle_debug.log says:
[03/23/2011 8:36 AM] – Advisory : Log file reset.
[03/24/2011 2:48 AM] – SUCCESS :This debug line was generated because you entered the URL of the ipn handling script in the browser.
CAN PLEASE ANYONE HELP ME?
March 26, 2011 at 1:45 am #18217amin007ParticipantHi Chris, there is nothing we can do from eStore’s side. Unless PayPal can deliver the IPN to your server the plugin cannot do anything. Godaddy is well known for this PayPal IPN issue on some of their shared hosting servers for a while now (looks like you are stuck in one of those servers). Just search for the following on Google and you will find it out yourself:
PayPal ipn timeout issue on godaddy
Checkout this thread on PayPal:
https://www.x.com/message/121905
The person who is replying to you from Godaddy doesn’t have the proper technical knowledge to understand what a 408 timeout error is (the error that PayPal’s notification server is facing). Just because you can go to that URL from the browser doesn’t mean the server is configured correctly to reply to PayPal’s payment notification server in a proper manner.
March 27, 2011 at 7:55 pm #18218Chris YCFMemberHey amin007,
thank you for reply. So I will confront Godaddy with that. If they will not solve it within 48 hours, I have to change hosting provider. Do you have any recommendation (one that’s working proper with eStore)?
March 28, 2011 at 1:15 am #18219amin007ParticipantAny hosting provider that works with PayPal will work fine with eStore (WP eStore does not need special hosting). With that said, this page might help you:
March 28, 2011 at 8:39 am #18220Chris YCFMemberGreat!
Thank you again.
March 31, 2011 at 9:39 am #18221Chris YCFMemberFinally we made it! Changed our hosting server to hostgator.com. I love working with the eStore plugin in. It makes our buisness so much easier.
Public advice: If your business is reliant on using Paypal’s IPN, don’t choose Godaddy as your hoster.
September 30, 2011 at 1:52 am #18222IvyMemberMake sure to checkout the list of plugins that do not play nice post as there are some plugins that also block PayPal’s IPN.
October 25, 2011 at 5:41 am #18223SDesignMemberRead every post about IPN failure and tried everything noted. Still not getting the summary of purchase on the thank-you page. See ipn_handle_debug.log below. BTW. hosted with HostGator
Here is a summary of my setup procedures:
PayPal Auto Return: On
PayPal Return url: http://www.mydomin.com//thank-you
PayPal PDT: On and token entered in wp eStore under payment gateway settings
PayPal IPN: enabled & referencing thank-you url
WP eStore: PDT token entered in wp eStore under payment gateway settings
WP eStore: Enable Transaction Result Display: checked
WP eStore: Use Automatic Post Payment Processing: checked
WP eStore: Thanks you page contains: [wp_eStore_transaction_result:end]
Also, the cart does not clear when customer is returned to the site.
Any thoughts? Below is the IPN log file.
IPN log file:

October 25, 2011 at 6:12 am #18224adminKeymasterWhat is the actual URL of your site?
October 25, 2011 at 6:01 pm #18225SDesignMember[admin removed URL as requested by the user]
BTW, I have disabled Sandbox for the moment, let me know if you need Sandbox turned back on.
FWIW, I also upgraded from the simple shopping cart by disabling the plugin then installing the WP eStore if that matters. Not sure if that would cause any issues, but thought I would mention it.

October 25, 2011 at 11:30 pm #18226adminKeymasterI don’t see that debug is enabled on your site. Can you set you site’s configuration to how you were testing it?
Alternatively, you can do a $0.01 live purchase and check it out (lot of the times things don’t work because something on your sandbox account is not setup correctly). Doing a live $0.01 purchase can help you identify if that is happening in your case. Be sure to keep debug enabled.
October 25, 2011 at 11:51 pm #18227SDesignMemberI will try the 0.01 purchase and let you know how things work, that was next on my list to try. Can you please remove the referenced URL above. I do not wish to have it listed/searched.
