Howto use email instead of the username?

How can we simplify e-member so that we do not use the username field? But rather use the email as a username or identifier. Can this be done?

That would make things more simple since most people forget their usernames but not their email address.

The username is a required field for eMember due to its relationship with WP user accounts and roles.
