Tagged: URL Shortener
Yesterday all the order confirmation emails that are sent to my customers after purchase began to be rejected and were bouncing back to me which means my customers were not receiving their download links. I checked with my web host and it turns out the google url shortener has been added to Spamhaus – [http://www.spamhaus.org/query/domain/goo.gl] – and now all emails containing goo.gl links are being marked as spam and rejected.
I’ve used the shortener for years and never had this problem before, it only began yesterday so I’m not sure exactly what has happened. In the meantime I’ve currently disabled the option to shorten download links, but can this be fixed or is there an alternative way to shorten links?
Technically, there’s not much that can be done. It requires a “political” solution. As soon as you find a shortener that is ***not*** listed in the DBL (Domain Block List), the spammers will start using it, causing Spamhaus to add that one to the DBL, etc.
Seeing as this is Google we’re talking about; I’m sure that Google is “working on the problem” already; as they did when Spamhaus blocked Google Docs back in 2010.
For the time being, do not use the URL shortener feature.
*****UPDATE*****
We’ve replaced Goo.gl with Bit.ly
