This has confused me for a while and after reading some of your documentation, I am even more confused!!

One of your documents on this page http://www.tipsandtricks-hq.com/ecommerce/wp-estore-instant-digital-product-delivery-499 says to create a thank you page and put the following shortcode in [wp_eStore_transaction_result:end] then enable PDT feature in PayPal and put the token into the gateway settings of WP eStore. My questions are:

    1. This PDT token area doesn’t even exist in WP eStore for me to put a token in!

    2. PayPal recommends not to use PDT if you’re going to accept credit cards!

    3. Why do I need a thank you page with a return URL explaining about the download links etc when in the WP eStore, General Settings, Email settings (and ticking the Send Emails to Buyer After Purchase box) there is an email body with references to encrypted links there etc?

Please help me get achieve the result I want.

Customer buys – pays through PayPal. Client gets sent an email with an encrypted link to downloads mp3. What is the ‘correct’ way to achieve this?

If you read the first line on the page you referenced you will it says the following:

“In addition to the product delivery via email, you can also choose to deliver the digital products on a post-payment return page (eg. Thank You page)”

Which means giving a link on the “Thank You” page is an additional thing that you can do. If you just want to send the customers an email then you don’t even need to use PDT or that documentation.

You simply follow the video tutorial on this page and setup the plugin which will have all the basic things that you are after (customer makes a payment -> the customer gets an email with the download link):

I’m sorry if I sound confused, but I still am!

I watched the video that you sent me to (I’ve seen it quite a few times before) and this is what confuses me.

    1. The video says to create a thank you page where the buyer will be redirected to after payment which will contain the encrypted links for downloading of digital product. (here we are directed to write a thank you for the customer and an explanation about the time frame for the links to expire)

    2. Place the URL of the Thank you page into the “Return URL” area of settings in the wp eStore settings page.

So far so good. This is clear.

NOW this is where I get confused.

In the settings area of wp eStore, the video shows that we are to have “Use wordpress mailing system” ticked. Then it shows a “Buyer email body” again explaining about encrypted links.

My confusing question is (same as my previous email), if the “Use wordpress mailing system” is ticked which means the “buyer email” gets sent along with the “Seller email”, where does the Thank you page fit in? It sounds to me that the customer will receive the Thank You page info and the “Buyer email body” info as it is ticked, which seems like the client receives two of the same email, or none as they might cancel each other out. I feel like only one of these should be implemented – either the Thank you page is sent OR wordpress sends the “Buyer email body” email, but not both. Am I missing something or being plain dumb? Help?

    Re: “Use WordPress Mailing System”

    * The buyer WILL ALWAYS get an e-mail message. You cannot prevent that from happening…

    * eStore has 2 ways of trying to send e-mail to the buyer. Sometimes, the preferred way of sending e-mail does not work; due to various technical reasons. By checking the box, you are telling eStore to use the “backup method” for sending e-mail to the buyer. That particular setting exists because eStore has no way of knowing the preferred method won’t work. The only way for you to know if you need to check this box is to complete some test purchases, and see if you get an e-mail, using the preferred method.

    Re: Thank You page

When a buyer finishes paying for their purchase over at PayPal, you can choose for one of three things to happen:

    1. No “Thank You” page: The buyer is silently returned to your site. They automatically receive an e-mail that contains the download links.

    2. “Thank You” page WITHOUT download links: They are returned to a “Thank You” page THAT DOES NOT contain any download links, and they automatically receive an e-mail that contains the download links.

    3. “Thank You” page WITH download links: They are returned to a “Thank You” page that also includes the download links, AND THEY STILL automatically receive an e-mail that contains the download links.

IN ALL THREE CASES, the buyer receives their download links by e-mail. You can’t turn that part off.

The choice of 1, 2, or 3, depends on the experience you want your customers to have. If you want customers to have “instant gratification,” use the “Thank You” page with the download links. If you want them to anticipate the arrival of their links, use the “Thank You” page without any links. If you, for whatever reason, you decide to not use a “Thank You” page, you can just return them to your site.

    Did this help?

Awesome answer and as usual, great customer service.

I’m sure you could see my confusion in thinking that the customer gets 2 emails with virtually the same body, which I wasn’t understanding why they would receive 2 emails!

I’m going to opt for the Thank you page with links and then the customer also receives the email with the links as well.

So one more query if I may. Should I then make the body of the Thank you page with links, the same as the “Buyer body email” so as the client doesn’t get confused as to why they’re receiving 2 emails – keep it congruent I guess, or it doesn’t really matter?

    Thanks so much again. Claude

They should be similar, in order to avoid confusion. I also add an explanation to the top of my Thank You page.

Here is what I use for the e-mail body…

    Dear {first_name} {last_name},

Thank you for purchasing digital product downloads from MyExampleSite.com website.

    {product_details}

***** IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS — PLEASE READ BEFORE DOWNLOADING *****

    1. You will be using the following encrypted link(s) to begin the download process: {product_link}

    2. Encrypted download links expire 24 hours, from the time this e-mail message is sent.

    3. Please ensure that your Internet connection is reliable. Download links expire after four (4) attempts.

    4. Please do not try to use any fancy download programs. They may not work, because the link(s) first point to a script that processes your download request.

    5. If you are reading this message from your Internet browser, do a “right click” on each download link and then “left click” on the “Save Link As…” or “Save Target As…” menu option, to begin the download process.

    6. Alternatively, you can copy and paste the download link(s) into the address bar of your Internet browser.

    7. If you experience any difficulties, please contact me at: https://MyExampleSite.com/contact

    Thank You,

Here is what I use on my Thank You page…

Thank you for purchasing digital product downloads from MyExampleSite.com website.

Within the next 45 minutes, you should receive an e-mail message with instructions on how to download your purchased product(s). The e-mail is being sent to the one you provided PayPal.

In the meantime, please review these important notes:

    1. You will receive an e-mail message, containing one or more encrypted download links.

    2. Encrypted download links expire 24 hours, from the time the e-mail message is sent.

    3. Please ensure that your Internet connection is reliable. Download links expire after four (4) attempts.

    4. Please do not try to use any fancy download programs. They may not work, because the link(s) first point to a script that processes your download request.

    5. If you use your Internet browser to read your e-mail, do a “right click” on each download link and then “left click” on the “Save Link As…” or “Save Target As…” menu option, to begin the download process.

    6. Alternatively, you can copy and paste the download link(s) into the address bar of your Internet browser.

    7. If you experience any difficulties, please contact me.

    Can’t wait 45 minutes? Here’s your links!

When you are confused it may help to do one step at a time. Forget about the “Thank You” page for now and just do a test transaction with what you have. Get a feel for what happens with the email after a transaction.

Once you are comfortable with step one then go to the next step where you add the “Thank You” page in the equation following this instruction:

WP eStore – Instant Digital Product Delivery on A Thank You Page

You don’t need to have the “Thank You” page setup before you can do a test transaction. As soon as you install the plugin and configure a product you are ready to place this product on a page and do a test transaction (the plugin should work with the default settings value after the install).

    You guys are amazing!

Your support is second to none. Not only did you deal with me ( a frustrated, sort of grumpy guy!) with professionalism, but your answer wasn’t a typical template answer that was only 3 lines long.

    I thank you so much.

    Hi there,

I believe I’ve followed the instructions for the instant digital download, including the creation of a thank you page, the [wp_eStore_transaction_result:end], the “enable transaction result display”, the PDT Identity Token, and the settings in Paypal.

But, the links are not displaying on the thank you page upon return from Paypal. I’ve tested the transaction several times.

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Will

PS, I’ve also tested the download links. Website: http://joelsiegel.org/music/

Please enabled debug and then run a test transaction. This post will explain more:

I’m having a download link issue. I’ve finally given up and integrated the Amazon S3 system to manage the mp3 downloads. There seem to be no typos in my product url that points to the Amazon S3 system. The automatic URL conversion preference is set to do not convert. Once a download link is generated and clicked on, the browser acts like it’s going to load something and then just stops. No save as dialog or anything. I was able to get .zip files to load directly from the WP uploads folder on Godaddy but I want the files to be able to download as .mp3 so people don’t have to unzip a single file. Here is a copy from the current debug – doesn’t seem to think it has issues. It literally is just that the download link doesn’t generate a save as dialog or anything else, it just loads nothing as though that is all that is there. I’ve been trying to get this cart system working for at least 15 hours, searching the forums, etc. I hope someone can help!

[01/20/2012 1:10 AM] – FAILURE :IPN product validation failed.

    Hi,

The key here is the “Funds have not been cleared yet” and this is something which is coming from the PayPal side.

The following post will assist you with what you can do to solve this.
