Can I require or make mandatory the Collect Customer Input field?

I just tried adding this script and it does cause an error message to be displayed. However, when I click “OK” to close the error message, the item is added to the cart with the blank field. Can you help me figure out why this isn’t working? Thanks!

UPDATE – I discovered that turning of ajax for the cart solved this. Wanted to share in case anyone else has this problem.

I’ve come back to this project and have discovered that this code is no longer working for me.

Cleared cache and now it works.
