WP Photo Seller: Working with High Resolution Images

I’ve finally developed a workflow where I upload high resolution images into the WP Photo Seller galleries, rather than adding from WP Media Library as that was creating duplicates and made a mess of everything.

My only issue is that I’m noticing in some places it looks like WP is using the large/full size versions of the images (eg: Media Library, view media)

I’ve created custom sizes to optimize images around the site, but it looks like I’ve got 20MB+ files trying to load when viewing some pages.

Is there a way to attach a specific file to a gallery item?

Adding ‘the_beach.jpg’ in the ‘Landscapes’ gallery at 5mb, then attaching ‘the_beach-highres.zip’ at 15mb linked to a digital download option for the gallery item?

I need to be able to offer site customers the option do download a high res file but not at the expense of site performance.

Any suggestions?

I think I may be on to something… It looks like there’s an issue with WP Media Library since 3.5 where full images are being used instead of medium sized. Am focusing on this now to resolve my issue.

Would still be a nice feature to attach a specific file and list it as a downloadable product…

It sounds like you are uploading your images from the WP media library instead of the gallery settings page uploader. This is not the correct way to do it.

The photo seller plugin will only create a copy of an image if you re-use it from either your WP media library or from another gallery.

If you have been directly uploading your images from the gallery settings page, then you should not see duplicates of any images if they are not being re-used in more than one gallery.

You must use the image uploader from the gallery settings pages when uploading your images for the photo seller plugin.

The reason for this is because the photo seller plugin does a bunch of processing of each image behind the scenes when it is being uploaded.

If you bypass this process you run the risk of affecting the functionality of the photo seller and hence some features might not work as expected.

Hi, thanks for your response. I’m now uploading all images via the Plugin gallery feature, not media library and duplicates have been eliminated.

Now I’m having issues with generating smaller sizes and I think the problem is because of the large file sizes I’m using for some of the images. No problems with smaller files.

Is there a file size (or image dimension) limit that would prevent Photo Seller from resizing digital download files successfully?

I’ve done several test orders and only the large/source file can be viewed properly, the smaller versions do not.

If it’s not a plugin restriction, I suspect it might have something to do with the server/php configuration. Maybe larger files take too long to process?

Hi, just purchased the plugin and also having problems with high resolution pictures. In the gallery not even all of the the thumbnails is visible. The 4 first thumbnails is correct but then you only can see the picture number. I did upload the pictures from inside the gallery. It also looks as when clicking to view the big pictures it takes very long time to load it, as if the high resolution picture is loading. I use fire fox and have a rather good broadband connection.

I also wonder if the it is important what WordPress theme you are using? I’m testing on Twenty Eleven.

Could you set up a test gallery for us with the same photos which you are seeing the issue with and set the pricing to $0.01 so we can try a full test purchase and download?

Also, does your site have enough memory – ie, What is your site’s “memory_limit” value set to? (If you are not sure, your host provider will be able to tell you)

I have a feeling that your site might be struggling to run one of the image resize functions which the plugin uses to generate thumbnails…possibly due to insufficient memory.

Hi, I have reseller account at Host Gator and I have checked and there is no problem what I can see regarding memory. I have 5000MB and 225MB is what is used so far. I also checked bandwidth and it is sufficient to.

Hi Gert,

I am not referring to your server disk space. I am asking about your server php memory_limit value which is the max amount of memory your host allows php scripts to allocate. If this value is too low then you will see issues similar to yours.

(ask your host provider for the value)

Hi, this is the answer I got from host provider. How come the pictures points to an adress that doesn’t exist? I have uploaded them from inside the plugin and done nothing more.

The php memory limit is set to 256MB for the php scripts.

We have checked your site and we are seeing that the images that are not showing up are pointing to a url on your domain that does not exist.

To correct this you should check the pages in wordpress to be sure that the image is pointed to a specific file. Once the thumbnails/images are pointing at a file name then the images should show without any issues.

Yeah the thumbnail URLs are definitely wrong. You didn’t do any code tweaking or customization in the plugin right?

Can you delete this gallery and recreate a new gallery with the images?

Yes, the photo details page is loading the high resolution image so it can allow your customers to zoom. You can control how big the image is from your gallery settings. You can specify a smaller width (than your original image) in the watermark image size.

Hi again! It was very strange. Those pictures had disappeared from the library! I reloaded them and now it works fine. I have left the watermark max preview on 600 but it sometimes is a bit slow anyway.

Another issue: How do I change the first picture (the one they click on to come in to the gallery)?

I am having much the same problem. The high res images are clearly being used in the gallery, and are slow to load.

If I try to set a watermark, the code crashes with an out of memory problem despite I have 512mb allocated on my hosting account.

I bought the plugin just a few weeks ago and have not got past these problems and am running into serious client timing issues.

Otherwise the plugin is a joy to use.
