WP Photo seller: Compression of images with white background creating artifacts

I am posting on behalf of my wife, who is starting up her photography business using a WP based website and using WP Photo seller.

She most of the time produces images with a white background, which will look perfectly fine in full resolution(23Mpixel). However WP Photo seller compresses the images to a much smaller resolution, to use as thumbnail or preview. These resized (or compressed) images with a white background all show the same behaviour: On the white background gray lines and other gray artifacts appear, where it should be uniformly white. It looks absolutely horrible.

I am quite sure it is related to the compression of the images, so I have tested several plugins that control the compression rate, but I have not seen any change, even when setting the jpeg compression factor at 100%. I also tried .png format, and also this does not matter.

Any help would be appreciated. I ran out of ideas and also this problem has not been reported that often, so I wonder what the cause would be.
