I’ve uploaded up to 2GB of photos (summing all the galleries) that have gone to 9GB in the uploads folder.
I know there’s watermarking and thumbnails and so on, but it still seems too much to me. Am I doing something wrong or this is how it’s supposed to work? For instance, I see duplicated thumbnails inside the galleries folders.
Is there any way to lower this size?
It mainly depends on your original image sizes. How large is one of your typical photo files?
Storage is not usually an issue anymore with hosting. So you shouldn’t really have to worry about the folder size. 9GB is an acceptable size when you are dealing with high resolution photos.
The photos I upload are usually about 120-150 KB. In some galleries they have less than 100 KB. They’re not at all high resolution photos.
And then, as I said, I see duplicated thumbnails. Specially the small one (150×150). After bulk uploading the files to a gallery, inside its folder (uploads/wp_photo_seller/’galleryid’) I find several thumbnails and then watermarked images. And also a folder that has the original files and more thumbnails. I assume the latter are wordpress thumbnails (150, 200 and 300px), and the other ones are plugin generated (for the gallery templates I choose to use). But this ends up duplicating some thumbnails.
So, for instance, when I upload a 121 KB photo, I end up having 400KB worth of files ( the original file (121kb), 3 wp thumbnails (142kb), 2 plguin related thumbnails (83kb) and the watermarked photo (54kb) )
The thing is right now I have uploaded around 25.000 photos. Not duplicating a thumbnail has a great impact. Not creating thumbnails I won’t use (let’s say 300x300px), even more.
And yes, the hosting I’m in has storage limits.
So, the question again is: Is there any way to lower this size? Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks

WP Dashboard –> Settings –> Media
Set the Medium and Large size dimensions to zero.
