When you specify variation for a product it will show up regardless of the button type you use. So yes for subscription buttons those variation will show up too. The only thing that won’t work is the different price with variations because subscription payments are complex (usually takes 6 parameters to define one payment) and processed via a different PayPal API.

The variation in subscription will change the “Recurring amount” value fine.

So for example, you have a subscription button with the following details:

$50.00 USD for each day, for 7 installments

You have specified a variation like the following:

    Package|Normal|Silver:20|Gold:30

When someone selects the silver package (which costs $20 extra) the subscription will become like the following:

$70.00 USD for each day, for 7 installments

So yeah for normal behavior the variation will work just like it works with any other type of buttons.

You just can’t specify a completely different subscription setup with each variation (example: different trial amount, trial period, recurring times etc). Whey? because the variation can take only one price value… it is not designed to take 6 subscription parameters. If you need this then create a different subscription product for each of your variations.
