I’ve been reading through documentation here and on the PayPal site and can’t find a definitive answer to this question:
Using eMember and PayPal with Enhanced Recurring Billing, will the monthly amount being charged to a member be automatically changed at PayPal, if they use an upgrade button that I’ve created for eMember?
I want members to be able to upgrade (or downgrade) their paid member level to a new paid member level.
The way it sounds at PayPal is that a subscription profile can only be paused or cancelled – the amount being charged to the profile cannot be changed. If I’m not misreading this, how would eMember be able to handle an upgrade/downgrade?

When someone pays for level 1 using button 1, they will have access to that level. At any time, they can cancel the subscription then use button 2 to pay for level 2. When they do that, their account will be upgraded to level 2.
A member’s membership profile will always reflect the level for the last payment he made. So at any moment, a member can cancel payment for one level and pay for another level.

From what you say, it sounds like, in order to upgrade to Paid Level 2, a member would need to cancel their Paid Level 1 subscription first, and then subscribe to Paid Level 2.
Will WP eMember automatically be cancelling the PayPal profile that was originally created for Paid Level 1? And then automatically creating a new PayPal profile for Paid Level 2 when the member clicks the WP eMember button for Paid Level 2?
I don’t want my members to have to go into PayPal to stop their recurring payment for Level 1.
If they do have to do a manual PayPal cancellation, I’m thinking it would be more seamless for me to break up my membership into parts, which would be concurrent PayPal subscriptions. So, people would sign up for Level 1 membership with certain features and ADD ON Level 2 as a second membership level with additional features. If they subscribe to both, they would have two PayPal payments coming out each month…

PayPal works like this, as part of their anti-fraud measures; by keeping the humans in the loop.

Your members can click on a button (generated by the shortcode) which will take them to their PayPal account and show them the subscriptions. They can cancel it from there. But yeah the user has to go to their PayPal account and do it.

And thanks for the prompt replies – I’ve found your customer support to be consistently excellent over the five or six years I’ve been using your products.
