Join Us Page: The join us page is basically where your non-members will be sent to so they can find out what membership options you offer on your site, what the benefits of each membership options are etc. You can think of the “Join Us” page as the “Start menu” of a Windows system (This is where you can expect the visitor to land when they are interested in your protected content so guide them accordingly).
The “Join Us” page allows the visitor to make up their mind as to which membership option they want. For example, the following is a very basic example of a “Join Us” page:
You can also place a link to your login page on the “Join Us” page so if a visitor is already a member he/she can just click that link and log into the site.
Essentially, the “Join Us” page is kind of like a portal with explanation of all the various membership options and activities you offer. This will give you user a quick overview of your membership scheme and get him to take action.
Registration Page: The registration page basically has a registration form that the visitors can enter in their information (for example, name, email, username, password etc) to register/create an account.
For example, the following is an example registration page:
Which page to send the visitors to?
When a visitor lands on your site he/she can fall into one of the following two categories:
1) The visitor is a member of this site.
2) The visitor is a non-member.
If the visitor is a “non-member” then at this stage you do not know anything else about this visitor. You have no idea if this visitor wants to be a free member or a paid member or a member at all (he doesn’t even have a good idea of what he will get if he becomes a member). This is why it is best to send the visitor to a generic “Join Us” page that lists all the available options so the visitor can choose as to what step he wants to take next.
Depending on your situation you may need to use different membership registration flow. The following page has a few good examples:

Hi, I’m use WP-eStore for digital products and have integrated the memberships WP-eMember as products. I am using 3 membership levels, Free, Standard and Premium. For the Free Member I want to bypass the cart and send them directly to the registration form. Is there a way this can be done? Thank you.July 28, 2011 at 1:57 am #23745amin007Participant
On your join us page simply link the free membership option to the registration page. This way anyone who wants to signup for a free membership will click on that link which will take them to the registration page and they can signup as a free member. Here is an example page that does the same thing:

I’m just getting started. I’ve followed the instructions to link emember to paypal and the button, and to aweber. There is no free membership and only one membership level (if they purchased the product they are in, if not they are out). I plan to test by making a purchase myself, but as I build my pages, where do I see what my customers will see after they buy and go to register on the site for the first time? Because there is no free level, all i see is a notice that “free membership is disabled.”
will they receive a random username and password in the email they get after they purchase?

Thanks for any enlightenment. we are launching the product this week and need the ordering and automatic membership process to be working even though we don’t have content in the membership area yet.It will be anightmare to have to enter all the members manually.

I just bought the WP eMember and am in the process of experimenting with it on my test site.
How will current members be handled? Do they retain the same passwords and privileges or do they have to reregister?

By current members do you mean “WordPress users”? If you do then eMember has an option to import them all into eMember from the following area:

Read over things about the eMember plugin, just need clarification that I am thinking in the correct terms. What if I want someone to add a digital product, and when they click order, it takes them to their cart, but either before cart or after they choose to checkout with paypal, I want to capture specific information in a form, something they have to do before they buy, similar to apple, amazon, bn, etc, need an account before checkout. Will eMember serve that purpose? Do i need to setup memberships to accomplish this, essentially they aren’t paying for being a member, just a way for a seller to capture customer data, specific data instead of generic: name, email, etc.

Yes, you can collect details as part of the *free registration* process from the customer/user. eMember lets you create custom fields that can be used to collect custom info from the user at the time of signing up.
Check the registration scenario 3.1 from the following documentation (there is a video too):
