MemberIf someone lands on a product page named [www.website/sdm_downloads/download-1/] they can go up to [www.website/sdm_downloads/] and see all the posts and downloadable items and also download them. Is there any way I can forbid that browsing?

ModeratorYou would use directives in your server’s .htaccess file:

MemberI put the code “Options All -Indexes” in .htaccess file and it is not working. Other codes I have in .htaccess that actually work against browsing, don’t work in this case neighter. It seems to me that [www.website/sdm_downloads/] is not actual directory or at least I can’t see it in my FTP browser. Please help!

KeymasterOne thing you need to understand is that the simple download monitor plugin is designed to be used with free downloadable items. The items are free, you just want to monitor the number of downloads each item gets.
If you need to protect your downloads, thats where WP eStore comes in. I can see that you have purchased the eStore plugin. So I am really sure why you are using simple download monitor for downloads that you want to protect/hide?
What am I missing here?

MemberYou are missing that I don’t sell items. I sell services. And I work with files which are my clients’ property, some of them copyrighted. I need exactly that functionality the simple download monitor plugin has, plus this protection/hiding. But I guess I can’t have it.

ModeratorSo, for any particular file or group of files; are you trying to limit access to particular clients or groups of clients? How are clients supposed to be granted access? And are you trying to setup more than 1 download directory?

MemberNo. I send particular file to a particular client by sending a particular link to them. They don’t have membership or any registration to my website and they don;t need any permission. All of the “downloads” I make with the download monitor plugin go in this virtual directory called “sdm_downloads” and if anyone go up from its file location to that directory they can see all the downloads I made, displayed on one page. Once, with another website, I lost the .htaccess file and one guy told me that I’ve valuated my own Privacy Policy by letting him see and actually download files that belong to other users. It was bad situation and now I try to avoid any similar situation I could have. I don’t mind if the plugin shows all of the other files/products if they cannot be downloaded. That’s my problem.

KeymasterJust an FYI..
You can dispatch that link for a client via the eStore plugin using an encrypted link. Here is what you do:
1) Create an eStore product with the file that you want to send to a client.
2) Save this product and note the product ID.
3) Go to the “Admin Functions” menu of the plugin
4) Generate an encrypted link for the product you created in step 1
5) Send this encrypted link to the client.
This link auto expires after a certain amount of time (or after a certain number of downloads). No one else can see it or anything.

MemberYes, but in this way I can’t see the numbers of downloads and the geo location true the IP info… That’s why I said I needed the plugin functionality. There are other ways to restrict browsing, but in any case I loose the plugin…
