Show only the "Quantity: [ ]" field after my 'view cart' button

If I create my own ‘view cart’ button is there a way that I can show the “Quantity: [ ]” after the button? I’d like to make some kind of button or link I can put anywhere, maybe in the menu or in a widget, so it’s out of the way but a customer can spot it and see whatever is in the cart (or click the button to go to the cart/checkout page.)

On that thought: anyone have some simple code handy that will insert a cart icon/link right into my ‘menu wrapper’…and if it can be made to appear the minute they put something in the cart, that would be especially sweet.

There is a function that can display a compact cart which will show the the number of items in the cart and a view cart link. The shortcode and PHP function reference page will help you find it:
