I am selling DVDs through our WP store. Many colleges that have non profit status are asking to purchase it tax exempt. I tried giving a coupon code for the amount of tax applied, but for accounting purposes, they actually need the tax line to equal $0. I realize that I can make a duplicate of the item I am selling in the store, call it tax exemt and uncheck the apply tax option. Is there a more graceful way to do this, such as a drop down menu in the item description, or a code to be applied at checkout? Thank you!
Out of curiosity, what country tax laws are we talking about?
This is in the United States.
How are you going, for your tax purposes, going to collect the appropriate tax exemption certificate numbers before allowing the purchases to be tax free?
Well, most tax exempt buyers have been paying by check, and I ask them to email me a copy of their certificate. This has not been a problem so far. When people purchase through the e-store, I will also request the certificate and if they cant provide it I will refund the purchase. This isa few too many steps for me, which is why I was hoping that the tax exemption could be activated by a coupon code. If you have any potential solutions, I would love to hear them.
A variation of the duplicate item store is to use something like eMember. If they first send you their certificate, and you verify them, you give them access to a “tax free” version of the store. Yes, you’d have duplicate items, but by using a membership plugin you’ll only allow access to the tax free items after they send you their certificate number.
Thanks wzp. Much appreciated.
