I use wp-eMembers (just updated to v6.1.2) on a site which free membership is allowed. To prevent registration spam I toggled reCaptcha in the wp-eMembers setting panel, and it seemed to be working as I manually tested by entering wrong captcha or leaving it empty.

However I still get about 5-10 registration spams everyday. Does it mean that reCaptcha is not effective anymore, or there exists a loophole where reCaptcha could be avoided? Is there any alternative to prevent such spammers?

Apart from reCaptcha I also installed TypePad and interested in “Stop Spammer”. I wonder if Stop Spammer is compatible with wp-eMembers since they use different account registration procedures. If not, is it going to be supported in the near future?

Spammers are getting more and more advanced these days :(

reCAPTCHA is very effective but these days some people actually spam manually by hand (there are companies that offer this kind of services). reCAPTCH is designed to fight bot spam not human spammers.

One good way to handle this is to block their IP address in your .htaccess file. Search for this topic in Google.

The problem is I couldn’t find if this plugin saves the IP of the registered user, so I do not know which IP should be blocked. And it is practically hard to analyse from the server log file.

Yeah the plugin does save the IP address. It uses the IP address to limit access if you are using the “Login Restriction by IP Address” feature of the plugin.

I am not sure if this IP address is displayed in the eMember but you will be able to find it from cPanel when you look in the eMember member’s database table.

We can potentially show the last accessed IP address of a member in the edit member menu.

You’re right, I found the IP Address in the eMember database.

That should solve the problem, thanks!
