I am selling gift card codes digitally on my site. I have run in to a problem that when I try to add an item of the same name it will not add to cart. I have 3 Amazon $25 dollar gift cards. All 3 have the same name and price. Each gift card has a stock number of 1. Each card has it’s own individual id number. When I try add one of the $25 Amazon cards, it adds t the cart. When I try to add another $25 Amazon card (it is a different id # card)the cart says “Requested quantity is not available! Available Qty: 1”. Now I shoulld be able to add this 2nd item to the cart as it is has it’s own different id#, it seems the cart does not recognize that it is a different item and only recognizes it by name. This is a big problem for me. Here is my site so you can see the problem for yourself, any card that has the same name, even though they all are different id #’s will not add more than one. http://instantgiftcards.net

For example, consider the following:
T-Shirt (Red)
T-Shirt (Green)
They both have the same ID but because the name is different the cart will add two different items which is expected.
You should not have the exact same name for two different products anyway as it can confuse the customers.

March 17, 2011 at 1:06 pm #30296mattsholtzMemberWhat about having the option to pick if you want to add items to the cart by id# or by name. As I can not think of another solution other than putting numbers in the name of each item, which looks bad. Can anyone else think of a way to get this to work?

These are separate items so there is nothing wrong with having a description or a SKU number added to the product name to make them different. This is very normal on any ecommerce store.
For example, the following 3 are the same title but slightly different in some way and the customer will not have any issue with the name of the product:
– Terminator 2: Judgment Day
– Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Skynet Edition)
– Terminator 2: Judgment Day #SKU100
