I would like to ask for suggestions to make the uploading of very large files of photos to the bulk import directory faster. Currently i have to download the zip file from drop box – takes about 2 hours and then ftp the zip file to the web server which takes about 1-2 hours. Then i can run the bulk import. The client does not want to use ftp to eliminate the first step. It’s possible having them break the number of photos into smaller files could speed up the process a bit. But what are other people doing? Are there plugins (i have looked but not found anything). Any tips to speed the process would be appreciated.

This is where the “Information Superhighway” analogy comes into play. Think of the connections between Dropbox, your local system, and the server in terms of infrastructure, distance, road & traffic conditions. Think of the way you move the files around (i.e. Zip files, FTP, et al) as the kind of vehicles you are using.

Your local computer is like an out of the way detour. You can save a tremendous amount of time by trying to do as much of the work as you can, directly on the server. Undoubtedly, the network connection between Dropbox and your server should be several magnitudes faster than the route from Dropbox to your local computer, and then back to the server.

There are a number of (Google is your friend) free WP plugins that will allow you to access Dropbox directly from the server. You can then use an SSH command line to unzip the files into the appropriate directories.
