I hope someone can help …
I have found myself on the end of marketing efforts by PayPal to upgrade to what’s known as PayPal Commerce.
“Introducing our all in one gateway payment solution PayPal Commerce. It gives your customers the option to pay directly with a card or through the PayPal button online as well as allowing you to take payments over the phone and having a PayPal Credit button at no extra charge. With options to add ApplePay and GooglePay early next quarter. PayPal Commerce has a really slick integration … [and so on]”
The PayPal rep tells me that if I upgrade to PayPal Commerce, which apparently is very, very easy, we can save thousands of pounds in transaction fees. I am not very technical so don’t know where to start to research the viability of any of this. I’m also suspicious by nature! Has anyone heard anything about this, and especially in connection to the eStore plugin?
Thanks in advance.

One last thing — the PayPal rep advised that “PayPal Standard will be discontinued over the coming months.”
Does this in any way affect the eStore plugin?

We are unaware of any impacts.
However, in various parts of the world, PayPal is paring back its service offerings. In Australia, PayPal Here will be discontinued on June 29; but is unaffected in other parts of the world. What the rep told you may only apply to the UK.
August 24, 2021 at 5:40 am #83547PJV20977SpectatorSorry to resurrect this, but …
I’ve been told today by a PayPal rep (via email) that “PayPal Standard is due to be discontinued and will need to be upgraded shortly. It will have an impact on you as this is the product you have on the website. If it is discontinued it will no longer work and you will not receive payments.”
Can anyone please advise once again if this is true? Sorry to ask but such emails are rather disconcerting!
My site currently uses the latest version of the eStore plugin for WordPress.

There has been no official announcement of any type; in regards to this matter. Neither has there been a response to a similar query posted on the official PayPal community forums.
The only official indication I can find that says PayPal Standard is being discontinued for anyone; is an integration footnote, stating that PayPal Standard is being discontinued for Magneto Community Edition, and that those users need to migrate to PayPal Express.
Because we are Verified PayPal Partners; we would be advised directly by PayPal, if such a situation develops.
August 24, 2021 at 5:10 pm #83550adminKeymasterThat information is not correct. We are a verified PayPal partner so we would receive information via our partner communication channel about this before any big changes like this are made by PayPal.
PayPal always comes up with new API and sometimes they discontinue some of those new APIs that they introduce but doesn’t get used by many people (specially in a particular country). The standard API is one of their most used API so it is highly unlikely that they will stop that.
I have a feeling that you are receiving scam emails. So verify the authenticity of that email that you have received.
On a side note, we use PayPal’s new API (express checkout api) with our following plugin. I feel that it works very similar to what you explained for paypal commerce. It offers card checkout, paypal checkout, pay in four (buy now pay later), as well as credit (if your account is approved for it). I also believe that paypal will add the apple pay and google pay option there sometime in the future. So you could check that out to see if you like it (there is a video that shows how the checkout process works):
