Next Gen Gallery crashes my website (built on Thesis 2.1 + WordPress)and I am wondering if it’s possible to use a different gallery to sell photos, and if so, which gallery plug in is recommended?

Hi, WP eStore plugin’s nextgen gallery integration requires the NextGen gallery. But you can sell your photos without nextgen gallery. Simply create eStore products for your photos/images then categorize them and use one of eStore’s many fancy displays to show them:

You can show all products (your photos) from a category using shortcodes.
