need some advice on best way to add a free membership

Here’s the site: http://www.critical-thinking-tutorials.com. It’s a membership site that where membership grants users access to online video tutorials on critical thinking.

I’m using eMember and eStore to manage this. There’s only one product, a “buy now” button where people can purchase a one-year membership. Everything works fine, when the transaction is completed a subscriber gets an automatic email with a link to register a username and password.

Now, what I’d like to do is offer a free membership to any student or faculty member at my home institution, Iowa State University. Everyone else has to pay, but if you come from Iowa State, it’s free.

I can do this manually, one at a time, as they come to me and ask to be added. This lets me confirm their status too (whether they’re actually students at ISU or not).

But I’m wondering if there’s a more automated way of doing this. I know I can set up a free membership level, but I need it to be regulated, I need to confirm each member myself. What I’d rather not do is have to enter all the details myself manually (username, password, email), for each member.

What would be nice is this:

1. a student sends me an email asking to be added as a member.

2. I confirm their status, and in the reply I include a link that will let them register a username and password

3. However, I don’t want this link to be shareable, I’d like it to be a unique link that has a time limit on it or something, so that students can’t just share the link with anyone and get free memberships.

Is there a way of implementing something like this with eStore and eMember? Or if not exactly something like this, at least an easier way to handle the free memberships than adding them all manually?

Very simple… after you receive their email address you verify their status and create a member account from the dashboard (you don’t need to fill everything just some basic info) then go to the “Admin Functions” menu of eMember. You will be able to generate a “Registration completion” link for this member that you just created from this page. Generate the link and send it to the member. From here onwards the steps are just like the same as the premium membership (the member will be able to follow that link and complete their registration).

So essentially what you are doing is bypassing the payment option for the people who are from “Iowa State”.

I don’t see an “Admin Functions” menu for my version of eMember. I’m using version v5.1.7. Is there a recent version with this option?
