I would like to make a free membership level that is available only to my close friends. Is there a way to password protect (or use invite codes) to limit registration for a particular level?
Place a back door registration form for this membership level on a post or page. This document have explanations on how to place a back door registration form for a level:

Now, you can password protect this post or page using WordPress. Only users with that password can view the full page and fill in the registration form.
Thanks for the help. that is a possible solution. But it doesn’t seem complete. If the user arrives at a page that is level-protected, the default text says Sign in or Join Us. The Join Us takes the user to the default registration form where he is still able to sign up. The workaround would be using the password protected registration page in the settings, but that precludes the possibility of having other paid levels.. which you don’t want password protected.
“If the user arrives at a page that is level-protected, the default text says Sign in or Join Us” – Who said anything about protectin this page using eMember ? You can just password protect a post or page in WordPress. So when someone lands on that page it says enter the password to view the page. When you edit the page, look at the “Publish” section and you will see an option to edit the “visibility” of that page.
