Is there a way of offering a free trial to a members area in eMember and limiting the number of Vimeo videos they can watch i.e.. a counter records how many videos they watch, they can watch any of the videos but after they’ve watched say 28 videos their member access will be denied.
Can some php code or something like that achieve this outcome?
March 2, 2021 at 7:17 pm #82682wzpModeratorSince the videos are hosted on Vimeo, there is really nothing you can do; all they have to do is either save the URL or use a web tool like Tube Offline.
If you are able to self-host the videos, either on your server or in an Amazon S3 bucket; there are 2 possible solutions…
- Simple WordPress Download Monitor Plugin
- Or the Authenticated Page Redirect (APR) feature of eStore.

1. I’m a bit confused about your statement:
“Since the videos are hosted on Vimeo, there is really nothing you can do; all they have to do is either save the URL or use a web tool like Tube Offline.”
2. Can the result I want be achieved with php or some other code?
3. Can the maker of the emember plugin do a custom job?
Thank you.
P.S. On another matter I’m not receiving email notification of replies to this thread even though I have checked the notification box below.
March 10, 2021 at 4:47 pm #82716adminKeymasterLittle bit of understanding is needed here. If you are publishing the video on a public platform like YouTube, Vimeo etc, you can’t make that video private (for member’s only). If it is posted on a public open site, a user can always find it. You can obfuscate it to make it hard to find but it can be found.
This is why serious video membership type sites will host the videos privately. You can host it privately on your own server or on Amazon S3. Then you can serve those videos to the users in a way that is more secure.
There is some general information on the following post on this topic (it will be good for you to read it for general knowledge and understand some of the limitations that exists for this):
How to create a Video Membership Site with Complete Protection to Your Videos
WP eMember will protect the WordPress post or page as advertised (so only a member can view the page). However, if you have the original/source videos that are out in the open on a public site (like Vimeo), then that’s not something a plugin can do anything about. That’s on an external site that anyone can find by directly going to that external site.
Check your spambox to see if the emails are going there. Mark them as “not spam”.
