I’m using the WP Simple Shopping Cart on my wordpress site. I sold an item and received a receipt from paypal however the item description comes in as jibberish so I’m not sure what it is that I sold. Website is http://www.ericksonian.com . Item description came in as “xxxBASE64_STARTxxxVHdvIEluZHVjdGlvbnMgZm9yIExlYXJuaW5nIEludGVncmF0aW9uw4LCoChDRCkxxxBASE64_ENDxxx”

    Can this be fixed?

The item description in the PayPal receipt is generated by PayPal from the item name that gets sent to PayPal.

Can you please recheck your item names and make sure that they have a proper name? The gibberish name has the following:

    BASE64_START

Which indicates that some sort of encoding was performed on the name (most likely a base 64 encoding). Do you have any security plugin that’s encoding your web pages and somehow encoded the item name too?

The problem seems to be with Paypal and it’s handling of characters that are not numbers or letters. I have a “-” (ie. Non-Smoker) in one of my descriptions which is probably the culprit. I’ve tried the method below and will let you know if it is successful.

    1) Log into your PayPal account at https://www.paypal.com

    2) Click the Profile link

    3) Click the ‘Language Encoding’ link under the Selling Preferences column

    4) Click the grey ‘More Options’ button

    5) Choose ‘ISO-8859-1’ from the Encoding drop down menu

    6) Select ‘Yes’ for ‘Do you want to use the same encoding for data sent from PayPal to you (e.g., IPN, downloadable logs, emails)?’

    7) Click ‘Save’
