We had someone find a way around the security in place and set themselves up with a membership without paying. Is there any way to step through and see how they did it? I’ve made the user inactive, but it’s darn mysterious.

Obvious thing to look for is to see if you have a back door registration form lying around somewhere. This is explained here (see the “Placing a Registration Form For a Particular Membership Level to Give Backdoor Entrance” section):

Then look for any auto upgrade option that you may have from free member to a paid member.
Please go to your PHPMyAdmin from cPanel and look into the “wp_eMember_members_tbl”. Find the record of this member. What value do you have in the “reg_code” field for this member?
