We have 100 or so accounts that we want to import form our old site. It had a phpbb forum. So I imagine there’ll be a problem with the encrypted passwords. We can export them form our database in and fashion needed but is there a way to import that list into eMember? Or any good ideas on how to accomplish this? It’s not a ton of people but with the password reset being sent via email in clear text I hate to make them reset their passwords.
May 22, 2015 at 10:42 pm #70150wzpModeratorAre you still going to be using phpBB? The user accounts for phpBB are maintained by WordPress, so you must continue maintaining them.
What you do is configure the WordPress User Integration settings under the eMember General Settings, and the Automatically Create eMember Account When… settings under the eMember Admin Functions. This will cause the eMember and WordPress accounts to synchronize with each other.
Now, as users log into eMember, they will also be automatically logged into WordPress, and can continue using phpBB. They must however, select new eMember passwords.
As for your question on password security, I answered it in your other posting:

May 23, 2015 at 12:28 am #70151ScotKinneySpectatorno, we won’t be using phpBB anymore. We just want to transfer the handful of users over in the most expedient way without making them have to change their password if possible but I’m guessing it’s not. What if we use another system for it like Buddy Press? Does it have a forgot password thing that works differently?
May 23, 2015 at 1:17 am #70152wzpModeratorYou are over-thinking the password reset security problem. It’s like replacing the deadbolt on your house with an S&G lock. Looks nice & secure, but I can always get in by breaking a window. Seriously; anyone who “is smart enough” to defeat the current password reset system, can get into your site by other means.
May 23, 2015 at 2:15 pm #70153ScotKinneySpectatorWell I’d rather not do it that way if I don’t have to, so what I’m wondering is, if I use the wordpress password reset will it get transferred to eMember? It doesn’t really look like it does.
It’s tough with all of these various database user tables to determine which one is the lead. I was having a hard time getting this straight in my mind from the get go. We’re wanting to use Buddy Press for all of it’s profile, messaging features etc too. And on top of it all we need to use one of these tables for our actual online game login too.
May 23, 2015 at 11:44 pm #70154adminKeymasterWhen you use emember, we expect emember to handle all your user’s login, registration, password reset and profile. That way it can apply the protection control the user’s access according to your setup.
If you use the following option then eMember will keep your WP User details in sync (so you can use other systems that need the WP Users).
