    Hello,

I just added some bird pictures that are very narrow and tall. I am using Gallery Template 8, which I really like. So I would like to continue using it. The problem is the square thumbnails are cutting off the tops of the birds’ heads! (Poor birdies!)

What I tried to do is go into Media > Edit and crop just the thumbnail to a ratio of 1:1 so it’s still square, but with the bird’s head centered in the image. It seems to work, because on the specific gallery page in admin, my new cropped image shows up with the tiny thumbnails for that gallery. However, nothing changes in the actual gallery on the page. I tried force regenerating thumbnails, but that did not help.

    Here’s the gallery I’m working with –>http://karenswhimsy.com/wp-dev/photogallery/pictures-of-birds/.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you!

I’ve looked at the behaviour of wordpress when you crop an image and my conclusion is that this one is quite difficult and tricky to do as far as the photo seller goes. The difficulty lies in the fact that wordpress creates a whole bunch of new image sizes after you do the crop and the photo seller would need to be programmed to selectively use one of those new images (eg, the new 150×150 thumb) which currently it doesn’t do.

But what if the photographer wants to discard all of the original image sizes and use the newly cropped/edited version for all sizes? The plugin would also need to account for that too.

As you can see the scenarios can get complex so for the meantime I would recommend that you use one of the templates which account for the portrait/landscape proportions, eg, template 2, 7, 10.

(Having said that, we are always striving for perfection and this “feature” will definitely be on our list as a future enhancement)
