This is the sequence of events that I have done so far.
1. Sales page made with Add to Cart buttons on it (Add to cart buttons being used because of multiple buttons)
2. Customer gets directed to my Checkout Page with shopping cart on it
3. Customer can then go to Paypal where payment is made
4. After paymnet is made, the customer gets a generic Thank you email from me (created in the Settings – Email Settings part of Estore). This thank you email contains the shortcode {product_link} ) From there, before the customer gets the download file link, I use the {product_link} that takes the customer to an Upsell/OTO Page (This is how I’ve done this: In the Add/Edit products – Digital content details, I have unchecked downloadable, and have put the URL FOR MY upsell/OTO page into the Digital Product URL BOX).
5. One the customer gets to the upsell/one-time offer (OTO) page, I have a video on there explaining what the OTO is. The customer then can choose to purchase the OTO and then be redirected back to paypal OR choose “No Thanks. Take me to my downloads.” **This is where my questions and problems come in. Here are my questions:**
a. Option 1 – The customer chooses to purchase the OTO (remember that the customer has not yet received the download links for the first purchase, because I used the {product_link} shortcode instead to bring the customer to the OTO/upsell page. However, i would like to have included the download link for the product in the first email How do I do this?). So the customer goes through paypal, but now I understand that when the customer makes a second purchase, the first cart is cleared so you can no longer display the original product download links (only the second set of product download links. How do I get around this? I thought that I could use the Buy Now Button for the customer to do the OTO, as then I could use a different thank you page to download the OTO product, right?
2. Option 2 – The customer chooses not to purchase the OTO. The customer can then go to a new page where the download link is. This is easy enough to do, however how do I create that download link for the file on this page, given that the {product_link} was used to provide the link that brought the customer to the OTO page? How do I create a different link?
I hope this all makes sense. I’m so close to getting it to work, but I need a bit of guidance. Thanks so much.
January 13, 2012 at 5:35 am #40711IvyMemberHi, Neither one of these options will work. The item that was purchased needs to be delivered either by email on on the thank you page when the purchase is made.
The best way to handle this is as follows.
Customer makes a purchase > redirected to the thank you page with their download links for the first product > upsell on the thank you page that they can purchase.
If you use Buy now buttons you can redirect to different thank you pages, this way you can put specific upsells for the different products you have.
Example:
Product A needs thank you page with upsell B
Product C needs thank you page with upsell D
I believe with all the new pages and redirects after purchase you are trying to do may frustrate your customers. When people make a purchase they usually want to get the item and start using it not go though redirect and upsells. They are usually more willing to buy an upsell if it is not a hassle to it. If I was the customer and had to go though the process you are outlining I would end up closing the browser. There is a really good saying to follow “Keep it simple”.

Thanks for your response. I guess that’s the way I’ll have to do it then for now. The only problem was that I will have multiple products, and I wanted to use the shopping cart. With the Buy Now buttons the customer has to pay for each product separately, which could be a negative for the customer (and me, profit-wise).
