I am having trouble hiding the username field from the profiles of our members, which is allowing all members to view other’s login usernames. How do I remove?
When members are logged in, they are able to view a member directory. In this directory they can click on member profiles and that is where usernames are visible. Is it common to not have user names considered secret?
I am not fully understanding your question. So let me ask you a question.
Are you using the following addon to display a members directory?

If you are then the answer is the following:
The profile extended addon has shortcode where you can specify which fields get shown. You can edit the shortcode (by editing the page) and remove the username field from the shortcode parameter to hide it.
I am using the addon. Where do I find the specific field’s shortcode? I want to mass remove the field from all of our member profile pages.
Edit the page that contains the shortcode. You will see the fields names in the shortcode. Remove the fields you don’t want.
Also, you need to FULLY read the usage documentation from the following page. That essentially explains how you construct the shortcode with the fields you want:

Its just not going to work if you don’t fully read the documentation.
