Hi, I am very keen to customize this error message that comes up for non logged-in users when they try to access a forum:
Private: You do not have permission to view this forum
I have seen another Tips&Tricks support topic where you said:
“That message actually comes from bbPress. So you can customize it by customizing the bbPress language file or the bbPress template file.”Unfortunately bbPress doesn’t seem to have a language file any more (at least, I couldn’t find it). I found the template file “feedback-no-access.php” and changed the error message to: “Oops, you are either not logged in, or you are not a member”
It saved with no problem, and the modified message appeared in the front end when tested. But after the user logged in and then logged out again, the default bbPress message was once again appearing, both at the front end and in bbPress template file feedback-no-access.php. I suspect eMember was causing this reversion in some way, as I can’t think of any other explanation.
Please can you look into this asap? My users get very confused by the default error message and they keep emailing me to ask why they get a permission denied message.

We do not make modifications to other plugin files. Are you using any caching plugins or server modules? Page caching will cause the issue of not seeing the updated text (because your site is serving a cached page with the old message).

No.Thanks for the suggestion but I don’t see how it can be a caching issue when the amended message appeared ok at the front end when first tested. Also, the template file itself reverted to the original default text.

Have you examined the modification dates & times of that particular file, to see if it is really taking your modifications & then “reverting” back to the original?

December 11, 2021 at 9:28 am #83975angelfire4xxParticipantIt took a while but I eventually found the right post in the bbpress help forum. The modified bbpress template file has to be uploaded to the bbpress directory of the Theme. If the theme doesn’t have a bbpress directory you have to create one.
Thanks for confirming that eMember didn’t cause the problem. Your answer prompted me to keep searching. I hope this post helps others. -
