For premium membership, no complete registration email generated

I have read and watched the pertinent documentation, ie

I also looked at the related topics on this forum. But I cannot fix this.

I am using a simple paypal subscribe button.

I added this to the advanced variables, where xxxxxxx= my domain name and 3 is the membership level:

notify_url=http://xxxxxxxx.org/wp-content/plugins/wp-eMember/ipn/eMember_handle_paypal_ipn.php

custom=subsc_ref=3

Everything seems to work (creates a member, returns to thank you page, sends user paypal receipt). However, it does not generate an email with a link to complete the registration.

I am working in paypal sandbox, and I have that option checked in the settings. But does that cause the problem?

You won’t get an email when using sandbox because PayPal sandbox emails are simulated email addresses (real emails cannot get routed to sandbox email addresses).
