Tips and Tricks HQ Support Portal › Forums › WP eStore Forum › eStore Upgrade – downloads directory gets deleted
I just want to give a heads-up that the upgrade instructions for the eStore plugin ignore a potentially very annoying problem, which is that if you sell digital products and store them in the eStore plugin’s downloads directory (…/wp-content/plugins/wp-cart-for-digital-products/downloads/) as some support posts in this forum tell you to, following the upgrade instructions will cause all those files to be deleted from your server, and you’ll need to re-upload them. This could be a huge pain if, like me, you have 38 GB of downloadable files!
These are the instructions I’m talking about, from this page on the support site:
• Deactivate the current version of the WP eStore plugin from the Plugins menu.
• Delete the current version of the WP eStore plugin from the Plugins menu.
• Now, follow the fresh installation steps outlined above to install the plugin.
Admins, you might want to add a caveat there to help out people like me?
The …../plugins/wp-cart-for-digital-products/downloads/folder exists, mostly as a demo folder, for when the plugin is first installed. As pointed out in the following (7 year old) post, relocating the production site download files to another directory is highly recommended:

BTW, those instructions you referenced “used to have” such a caveat, but I see that they have mysteriously disappeared… 8(
We don’t recommend storing the files in the plugin’s folder. Separating the downloadable items from the plugin is a good thing. When you upload using the plugin’s uploader, it will store the files outside the plugin’s folder so if you are using that approach, you should never have an issue.
If you want to store the files in a custom directory yourself, then you should create a folder somewhere outside the plugin’s folder and store the files there.
Okay, thank you–I’ll move our downloads somewhere else.
