Hi, We’ve got the shop working and integrated with Paypal. The issue comes with the .m4a and .mp3 files that we have hosted in the WP folder and people downloading them from the generated links.
1) A person pays via paypal and gets the generated link on screen / in an email
2) The person clicks on the link and gets:
example.com/?enc_dl_action=process&file=J2k6BI4llPWx1RO8
This site can’t be reached
“The webpage might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.
ERR_INVALID_RESPONSE”
Then, because we have download limits on, it tries to download the file again and locks the link for any other tries:
The secure download manager ran into a problem that it couldn’t handle, and is unable to process your download request.
“The problem was due to the following reason:
The download link (see browser address bar) has been used too many times. If you think this reason is in error, please contact the site administrator.”
I’ve deleted the .htaccess from the downloads folder and removed all spaces from the filenames, as it said to do in the checklist. I’m a little bit stuck now with what could be causing the issue.
We have a deadline of the next day or so, so would appreciate help resolving this asap.
Many thanks,
Andy

- Are using Chrome, and have the mod_sec (ModSecurity) application installed on your server?
- And if you use a browser besides Chrome, you receive an HTTP 403 error?
“The problem was due to the following reason:

That is a normal eStore error, that occurs because you (tried) using the link too many times.
The mod_sec server module is configured to prohibit direct browser access to certain parts of the the WP directory. Please consult with your hosting provider, to resolve the issue.
January 10, 2018 at 6:57 pm #77083theramsdenMemberHi,
Thanks for the prompt reply. I livechatted with GoDaddy support, and as it’s a shared hosting plan, they can’t disable it for just 1 client, it would have to be for all.
Do you have any other workarounds please?
Thanks,
Andy
January 10, 2018 at 7:51 pm #77084wzpModeratorTry placing the download directory at the root level of your virtual server (the same level as the wp-admin directory).
January 10, 2018 at 8:17 pm #77085theramsdenMemberHi Wzp, i’ve moved the folder and updated the product link. Using the admin function to generate a link, it still shows the “this site cannot be reached” error.
I’m trying to look at solutions – can this be rectified using .htaccess?
Many thanks,
Andy
January 10, 2018 at 8:36 pm #77086theramsdenMemberHi,
Having doing a bit of testing with the “example” files in the downloads folder, it seems that zip files work ok. Our plan B if we’re stuck is to zip the files being sold, so this will work for our freelance client.
If you do think of any other workarounds, please do let me know.
Thanks for your help.

January 13, 2018 at 10:41 pm #77088theramsdenMemberHi,
Got this working now. For those with GoDaddy basic wordpress hosting, this is probably what caused the issue.
We’ve moved the domain to my alternative hosting with the same files and works perfectly.
Thanks support for your help
Andy
