Just to say up front, this functionality seems to be working fine, or at least the vast majority of times there are no issues. So I think I’m looking more for reasons this might happen on occasion.
In the last few days I’ve had a couple of customers who did not receive the instant download link and following email, even though PayPal shows their purchase completed successfully. In these two cases, I also show no record of the customers purchase in the eStore “Manage customers’ section. Other customers seem to have had no problems, which is why I don’t really think the problem is in my setup.
My guess is that, after the PayPal side completed, something interrupted the response from PP to my site, such that my site never got acknowledgement of a successful transaction. But, just for my own information, I’d like to know if there are any known circumstances that cause this, and/or is there anything I can do to avoid it?

Lets get some debug going so we will know exactly what is going on. Do you by any chance have debug enabled on your site? If you don’t please enable it:

Then when you see a transaction where things didn’t work as expected we will be able to analyze the debug and see what happened.
