I am selling ebooks, so I need to change Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 of a digital download to PDF, EPUB, MOBI.

Can I specify this in the back-end or do I need to edit the code?

It’d be great if I could drop the file-type variable into the place of Part X.

The part is only shown when you have multiple files for the same product. Given your scenario… it looks like you should use the “Digital Product Variation” option? See the variation control documentation for more details:

FYI – You can customize the text “Part” to anything you like using the following technique:
