Hello,
For the auto-reply emails within eMember, is there any way to track bounced emails that are sent? (The reason for this is to be able to determine when a user may not have received the expiry/renewal emails because their email address on file is no longer valid)
Thank you!
December 15, 2016 at 5:36 am #74786wzpModeratorThe processing of “bounced messages” is very non-standard and varies from one email system to another. Your SMTP server log might contain some usable clues about bounced messages.
January 19, 2017 at 4:10 am #74787clearscopedesignParticipantWe have contacted the email provider, but unfortunately they do not provide access to the SMTP server logs. They did say, however, that we should be receiving any bounced messages for these auto-emails at the ‘From’ email address that is specified for each of the auto-email templates. However, we do not seem to receive any bounced messages as such there.
Can you please tell us:
1. Do you have any idea why we wouldn’t receive bounced messages (when they occur) for the auto-reply emails, at the ‘From’ email address specified?
2. Do you happen to know if moving the email system to either G Suite or Microsoft Exchange would allow for tracking eMember bouncebacks via the SMTP server logs (or tracking such bouncebacks some other way)?

The processing of bounced messages is outside the plugin’s bailiwick. It is handled by the rules that you’ve previously setup in your email client and server. It is also possible your domain’s MX records are playing a small part; depending on how your domain services are setup.

Several other sites also use external SMTP servers; besides the one provided by their hosting provider. Be forewarned… you need to ensure the external SMTP server is properly configured to accept outgoing messages from your domain; since it will differ from that of the SMTP server.
