emember login not logging into wordpress

I’ve set up bbpress forums on my emember site. I have set up the plug in so that people who log in to emember are automatically logged into wordpress (and then can access and post on the forums). However, I am intermittently having a problem with people logging into emember and being kept out of the bbpress forums (“you must be logged into reply”). This occurs even if they refresh the site after logging in, and even if they delete cookies and try again. But sometimes the dual log in works. There is a sort of random period of time after which people log out and log in and log out and log in and at some point the systems synch and they can use the forums. However, as paying members they reasonably expect a more predictable system.

I am using the most recent versions of WordPress, bbpress, and the emember plugin. The problem has been occurring since members started registering and using the forums.
