You don’t need to give them the password to login. You simply tell them to use the “Forgot password” feature to reset their password. The forgot password feature can be accessed from any eMember login widget. It only requires the email address of the user. So in the email you can say something like the following:

Go to the login page (give the link to the login page). Click on the “Forgot Passowrd” link. Enter the email address to reset the password. Now, they can login to the site.

Now, regarding the mailmerge question… what you suggested should also work. At the moment the email sent from that member profile edit area doesn’t do the mail merge for [password] and [login link] but that can be added to the plugin. You actually don’t need a mail merge for [login link], you can simply enter the URL of your login page there. Anyway, I think the forgot password option will be easier for you. If that doesn’t work then let me know.
