I have a few free downloads on a page that is also protected with the emember plugin. When the user clicks download – it then downloads the file from Amazon S3 – so that’s good. But if I then go to a different page on my site and then hit the browser’s back button it goes back to the downloads page and downloads the file again. Appears to be a bug.
Question, if you wait 6 minutes before hitting the back button, does it still redownload? Also, are you using any page caching?
Hi. Thanks for replying. I’ve just done a little bit more testing and here’s what I found (I’m not using any page caching in WordPress). I’ve also tried delaying for more than 6 minutes as you requested.
All of these tests involve clicking the free download button on the page – then navigating to a different page and then hitting the back button in your browser.
IE: Hitting the back button takes you to a “Webpage has expired” page – I’m presuming this is because the link generated for the download has expired. Hitting back again takes you to the page
Firefox: Notifies me “To display this page, Firefox must send information that will repeat any action (such as a search or order confirmation) that was performed earlier.”. If I say “Resend” then it goes back to the download page and automatically starts downloading the file.
Chrome: Notifies me “Confirm Form Resubmission”.
Thanks again for your help.
The behavior seems “predictable.” I’d only be concerned if you can bookmark the link and then reuse it at will.
