The short answer is “mostly yes.”
The “?ap_id=rubyx” part of the URL is called the “query string.” The “ap_id=rubyx” identifies the affiliate that referred the visitor to your site.
Once a visitor arrives anyplace on your site, using an affiliate ID query string tacked onto a URL, an affiliate ID cookie is set on the visitor’s browser and from that point on (until the cookie expires or gets deleted), that visitor is associated with the affiliate; regardless of where they go on your site. The affiliate ID cookie only needs to be set once.
If somebody visits you site, using a URL without an affiliate ID query string tacked onto a URL, no affiliate is ever associated with that visitor.
thanks!
