title says it all: how does estore actually use timthumb.php? Is it necessary or could we just kick it off the server?

Hi,
eStore uses the thimthumb library for various actions such as cropping and resizing of images.
If you are not using the “Enable Smart Thumbnail” option from the settings then you can delete it.
