Some people get confused with the button behavior and the button text or image. Hopefully this post will clarify a few concepts.
The button behavior refers to how the button acts when you click on it. The button’s text or image refers to how the button looks like (this has nothing to do with how the button behaves).
There are four types of buttons(3 payment buttons and one secure download now button) that you can create when using the WP eStore plugin:
1. Add to cart (the item is added to the cart… useful for multiple item checkout)
2. Buy Now (takes directly to the payment page… useful for single item fast checkout via PayPal)
3. Subscription (similar to buy now button but used for creating recurring/subscription payment)
4. Download Now (The file can be downloaded now without purchase. This is used for when you want to give away a file for free but want to keep the file location hidden)
1. Add to Cart Buttons
This documentation explains how to create “Add to Cart” type buttons:
Just remember that “Add to Cart” type buttons need a shopping cart to go with it. This allows the plugin to display the items that the user adds to the shopping cart. So you will need to place a shortcode on a page or post that actually shows the shopping cart when you use the “add to cart” type buttons. The shortcode list has shortcodes that lets you place a shopping cart anywhere you want on your site.
2. Buy Now Buttons
Buy Now type buttons are single item checkout buttons.
This documentation explains how to create “Buy Now” type buttons for PayPal:
The following documentation explains how to create “Buy Now” type button for any gateway available in eStore:

3. Subscription Buttons
Subscription type buttons are used to create a recurring payment structure. This documentation explains how to create “Subscription” type buttons:

4. Download Now
You can either give the product for free via a squeeze form or via a direct download now button.
The following documentation explains the squeeze page option:
Please see the shortcode list for the download now option. All the available shortcodes are listed here:

5. Donation Buttons
Donation buttons are used to accept donation for a cause. The donation type buttons take the user directly to the PayPal payment page for donation when clicked.

F.A.Q
With that said, the following section should clarify the mystery of button behavior and button look & feel:
Question: I have placed an “Add to Cart” type button but I have customized the text of the button to say the words “Buy Now”. When I click on this button what will it do?
Answer: It will add the item to the cart because the button type is “Add to Cart”. How the button looks has got nothing to with how the button behaves. The ability to use an image for a button is there so you can customize how your button for a particular product looks. It does not dictate how the button behaves.
